Electricity Saving Tips

The easiest way to cool your home is to keep the heat from building up in the first place. The main source of heat build-up is sunlight absorbed through the roof, walls, and windows. Heat generating appliances also add to it. These tips will help you cut down consumption.

- Close your draperies, windows, and doors on the sunny side of your home on hot days to reduce solar heat build-up.

- Use fans to draw cooler air into your house.

- Turn off incandescent light and switch to compact fluorescents since they give off less heat and use less energy.

- Keep pots tightly covered while cooking to reduce heat loss.

- When using an air-conditioner, set the temperature at 25 degree Celsius.

- Replace air conditioner filters regularly. Dirty filters restrict airflow and increase energy use.

- Turn off appliances, lights, and equipment when not in use.

- Use long bamboo poles to dry clothes. Dryers release a lot of heat during operation and consume a lot of electricity.

- Whenever possible, purchase electrical products that carry the Energy Label.

Water Saving Tips

- Regularly check your taps and pipes for leaks, and repair any leaks detected.

- Install water-efficient taps and shower heads to cut your water usage.

- Take shorter showers and turn the shower off while soaping.

- Do not use running water to defrost frozen food. Place the food in the refrigerator to thaw overnight.

- Use a tumbler of water to rinse your mouth instead of leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth.

- Use a pail of water to wash your car rather than a hose.

- Rinse dishes in a plugged sink rather than under running water.
