Contemplation Before and After Meals

This post is written by my girlfriend and I would like to share it here so as to benefit more people. Hope it benefit you too!

Dear Dhamma Friends,

So many natural disasters have been mercilessly "attacking" our neighboring countries since the last few weeks, I really feel helpless for all victims. Other than just donating monies and sending my prayers to them, there is really nothing which I can do here. The immense sufferings like losing their love ones, no proper sanitation, lack of shelter, food and clean water which those victims have to go through are just hard to imagine and indescribable.

I feel blessed to be here in Singapore. Glad to be able to wake up in the morning alive, thankful for all the delicious food and fresh, clean water which I received every day.

Without fail, I counted my blessings which I was given and say/offer my prayers every day.

As Dhamma followers, I wish to share with all of you the basic contemplation of food offering which I have learned during my Buddhist camp.

I hope that all of you can take some time to appreciate the foods and drinks which are laid nicely on your table. Start with a simple prayer and contemplation.

Contemplation Before Meals

I take this food not for beauty or pleasure but for the sustenance of my body. With this food, I maintain my strength to seek the Truth.

May I share the merits of having this meal with all sentient beings. May they be well and happy, free from all mental and physical sufferings. May the Triple Gems bless them.

Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu.

Contemplation After Meals

I dedicate the positive merits I have gathered to all beings. May I and those around me, now and in all our future lives, never be separated from the Triple Gem.

May we continuously make offerings to the Triple Gem, and receive deep inspiration from them. May all those involved in the preparation of these food be blessed with good health, happiness, and peace.

The food I took relieved me from the suffering of hunger for a while. I seek to overcome all forms of sufferings completely.

May I not forget or slacked in my efforts to seek the Truth that release me from all sufferings.

Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu.

May I wish all my Dhamma friends/ followers well and happy always. Have a mindful meal!
